A multi-million rand police station construction project in Odendaalsrus, which began in August 2018, has been left incomplete and abandoned, despite R77 million being budgeted for its development. By July 2020, R43 million of taxpayers’ money had already been spent, yet the site now stands deserted, forcing residents to rely on distant police stations for essential services.

Project Stalled, Funds Unaccounted For

The incomplete structure has become a symbol of wasted public funds, with no clear explanation for the halt in construction. Local residents expressed frustration over the delays, stating that the promised facility would have improved safety and service delivery in the area.

“When I came here in February 2020, it’s been like this,” said one resident. “They started the construction, and nothing happened. It just stopped halfway. I have no idea what’s going on.”

Another resident, a youth representative, lamented the lost opportunity: “We thought this project would bring change. Now, we no longer take this site seriously. It’s heartbreaking.”

Blame Game Between SAPS and Public Works

The National Department of Public Works claims the project stalled because the South African Police Service (SAPS) failed to pay specialists, including surveyors and architects. However, SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe countered that funds had been provided to Public Works to complete the project, shifting responsibility back to the department.

“Public Works is responsible for running the project,” Mathe stated.

Despite these claims, the building remains unfinished, leaving the community without a much-needed police station and raising serious questions about financial accountability.

Residents Demand Answers

Frustrated residents are demanding transparency, questioning how R43 million could be spent without tangible results.

“We don’t know what happened to the funds meant to improve this building,” said one local. “We are not happy about that.”

With no clear resolution in sight, the abandoned site serves as a stark reminder of mismanagement, leaving Odendaalsrus residents to bear the consequences of delayed justice and security services.

Authorities have yet to provide a timeline for when—or if—construction will resume.
