A lone woman driving towards Cape Town on the N2 on May 1, 2015 at about 14:00 suffered a burst tyre just before the R300, whilst driving in the outside lane.

A number of black males dashed across two lanes of traffic, smashed her car window with a brick and stole her handbag before running back into the shacks.

The lady suffered minor injuries from the smashed glass, needless to say she is shaken but otherwise okay.

A member of Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch (SW NW) arrived on the scene, by chance, two minutes after the attack and stayed with the lady until SAPS arrived.

Having broken down there myself last weekend whilst alone, I count myself exceptionally lucky. Three Males approached me but saw me on my NW radio and took the decision I was a police officer.

We can give you many words of advice, keep your valuables in the boot, cell phone/NW radio close by/emergency numbers to hand, doors locked, windows fractionally open (aids resistance on window breaking) but it won’t prevent every incident of crime.
