“We also see that the government is pretty neutral about the ever rising crime and that it is not a priority for them,” said, Louis Meintjes, president of TAU SA. “In contrast, hysterical attention is given to the so-called radical economic transformation, where land ownership and property rights are central. It is no longer a secret that a possible constitutional change to land theft without compensation is possible on the government’s agenda.”

TAU SA has with serious concern noted the latest crime figures released last week and pointed out that on 3 February 2017 and 12 January 2017 letters were sent to the Minister of the police as well as the Acting National police commissioner with the request to align statistics to which we have received no response. For the period 1 April 2016 – December 31, 2016, TAU SA recorded 53 confirmed farm murders against the SAPS 47.

However what is even more alarming, said Meintjes is that it’s figures from last year only, while almost every South African has taken note of the wave of farm murders and other violent crimes, some arising from protests that occurred in the past two months of this year.

“What the government does not realize is that no economic transformation will succeed unless certain determined principles and measures are put in place. Whatever happens with the economy, it must remain sustainable. For to take from one and give to another, was never sustainable in world history and will not be in South Africa. As long as the country is currently experiencing a spirit of lawlessness, and supported by the cancer of corruption, any change would only amount to the benefit of the corrupt and to the detriment of the real poor. ”

TAU suggests that, before we look at so-called radical economic transformation, the following should be given attention:

  • The political will must be revealed to stop the crime with radical action and to arrest criminals.
  • Corruption must be eradicated at the root and branch level and should be seen as a prerequisite of any economic stability and growth;
  • Private property rights should be well established and recognized without any exception. This applies to agricultural land, but also to establish private ownership of RDP houses as well as state-owned agricultural land. The properties will then be a working capital for the owners while currently, it serves no purpose as dead capital, except that the government uses it to manipulate the masses.
  • Thereby it will possibly attract larger investments because conditions will be stabilized because of fundamental economic principles, and not political emotional rhetoric;
  • Entrepreneurs would be able to do business that will immediately create a sustainable way to fight poverty;
  • Natural, free, and sustainable economic growth arising from it will help to increase the country’s capacity to address the critical poverty and unemployment issues.
