Dutywa police arrested a suspect last night after the senseless murder of an elderly woman aged (85 years). The woman was killed on Thursday night 18 January 2018 at about 20:50 at Cacadu Village near Dutywa.
It is alleged that the 85 year old woman was with a relative at the time of the attack. The balaclava wearing suspect arrived at the homestead and started attacking the old woman. He fled the scene on foot after killing her.
The police members from Dutywa started with their initial investigation. They thoroughly comb the crime scene and linked the suspect during their intense investigation. With the assistance of the community they traced the whereabouts of the suspect.
The 34 year old suspect was arrested at a nearby tavern. He will make his appearance in the Idutwya Magistrate’s Court on Monday 22 January 2018, facing a murder charge.
The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga commended the members for the swift arrest of the suspect.
“It is shocking and inhuman that a young person could do this to his own elder especially in this own locality. We urge our community leaders to earn and demand respect back from our youngsters. This is disheartening, to be a witness to the decay of our moral regeneration and should be addressed immediately “, she said.
I urged our members to continue with their hard work and strive in restoring confidence in the people we serve, Lieutenant General LE Ntshinga added.
