The sentencing is as follows, the rapes, life sentence for each count and rape a further 15 years, kidnapping 3 years for each count, robbery with aggravating circumstances 15 years and pointing of a firearm 5 years.

All other sentences will run concurrent to the life sentence .The accused is known as Kwanele Nogodama.

It is alleged that on Wednesday, 19 October 2016 at about 18:20 two students, aged 18 and 20 years old from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) boarded a taxi to the central business district (CBD).

The taxi driver failed to stop at their destination but instead drove them to Kwazakele. One of the victims was allegedly raped before the driver brought them back to the CBD. The driver then drove with them around the CBD before taking them back to Kwazakele where both females were allegedly raped at a house. The following morning they were dropped off at a bus stop. They reported the case at SAPS New Brighton.

On Sunday, 30 October 2016, the FCS unit in Port Elizabeth received information that the suspect is a passenger in a taxi near Njoli Square New Brighton. Information was immediately followed up and the suspect arrested. He remained in custody until the finalization of the case.

The Cluster Commander for Mount Road Cluster, Maj Gen Funeka Siganga has commended the FCS unit for their thorough investigations. “We commend our FCS Unit and our justice system for their sterling efforts in bringing these perpetrators to book. The SAPS has the responsibility to protect the vulnerable in society and these responsibilities are taken seriously through thorough investigations, effective arrests and prosecutions. Sentences such as this will serve as a deterrent to potential rapists and the SAPS through its FCS units will leave nothing to chance,” added Maj Gen Siganga.
