Kirkwood farm violence and destruction - Nicolas Verwey (48) has sadly passed away

Security guard Nicolas Verwey (48) has died 2 months after a brutal attack by striking farm workers in Kirkwood in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

Nicolas Verwey (48) died in hospital on Thursday 16 June 2022 after a brutal and heinous attack on him by a group of striking and rioting farm workers.

Verwey was deployed to one of the farms in the vicinity on 25 April, 2022 to protect property against rioting farm workers who were causing widespread destruction and havoc in the area because they wanted a pay rise.

A mob of striking workers attacked a car in which Nicolas and another guard were traveling. The mob dragged Nicolas from the car, stabbed him in his shoulder with sharpened sticks, mercilessly beat him and jumped and stomped on his head whilst he was lying on the ground.

The riots by the citrus farm workers in Kirkwood eventually led to destruction and damage to farming equipment and infrastructure worth millions of rands.

Why would workers bite the hand that feeds them by attacking the property of the same people who pay them a salary? And how much of this violence, destruction and murder is as a result of the ongoing hate speech and incitement?

Verwey underwent two brain operations but he never recovered and his body eventually gave in on Thursday when he passed away. Nobody was ever arrested for this barbarous attack.

Terrence Tegg was killed on 17 February this year when a group of striking Clover workers stoned him to death. He was assigned to protect Clover managers.
