The President of the TLU SA on 28 April 2022, wrote a letter to the Minister and National Commissioner of Police in which he expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of actions of the SA Police Service to control the situation in the Sunday River Valley.

Mr Bennie van Zyl, General Manager of TLU SA, said that in his letter, Mr Henry Geldenhuys (President TLU SA) informed the Minister and the National Commissioner that, in addition to claims for damages, the persons concerned will also be held personally liable by the establishment of a class action.

Mr Geldenhuys also used to talk to Mr Peter Cloete Agri Eastern Cape’s President, spoke about the application of joint pressure and to provide support where possible.

Mr Van Zyl further said he hopes that immediate and proper action will follow in order to limit further damage in all respects.

“It is clear from what we have seen happen here, that the police do not have the ability – or apparently the will – to look after and protect law-abiding citizens. We call on the police to speak out about the fact that law-abiding citizens of the country have the right to defend themselves against crime,” said Mr Van Zyl.

Unrealistic expectations were followed here by criminal action and the SAPS stood and watched how the crime was committed. The leaders of our country’s police and justice must speak out strongly against crime and point out that law abiding citizens have the right to protect assets and lives. Arson not only destroys assets but endangers lives.”

There was also further concern about the possibility of further job losses in the country already plagued by huge unemployment figures as farmers could decide to focus more on mechanisation to avoid incidents and dangers such as these.
