Police in the Motherwell Cluster this weekend ending 17 December 2017, clamped down on persons breaking the law in terms of alcohol related crimes during festivities.

Special Crime Prevention Operations on Friday night 15 December 2017, focused on taverns and drunken driving, while police were visible at Wells Estate on Saturday night to police the festivities at this popular beach.

In this time more than 50 taverns were visited to check compliance with the Liquor Act as well as 37 stop and searches conducted on main routes in the area.

A total of 44 drunken driving cases were opened and the drivers arrested while 22 persons were arrested for possession of mandrax and dagga.

At Wells Estate on Saturday night revelers were celebrating the opening of the season. Police destroyed more than 60 litres of alcohol being consumed on the beach itself and SAPS had to step in and break up four fights which were alcohol related.

The Motherwell Cluster Commander, Major General Dawie Rabie repeated the stance that SAPS will show a zero tolerance approach for law breakers during this festive season.

“We are nearing the peak festive season leading towards Christmas and we as the SAPS will continue to police our areas in high numbers to ensure the safety of our community” he added.
