The unflinching efforts by Maclear Detectives to bring the murder suspects to book were handsomely rewarded when they could link the suspects to a cold 2016 case.

It is alleged that on 22 November 2020 at 21:50 a lifeless body of a 20-year-old man was outside a tavern in Vincent Park, Maclear with stab wounds. The investigating officers Warrant Officers Julius Mani and Edison Mnginga and Sergeant Lwando Tshestha collected the CCTV footage from the tavern as part of the investigation.

Two days later, witnesses identified the two suspects on the footage as Khanyiso Mankonkwana, 24, and and Siboniso Rwexwana, 25.

Both were arrested for murder and appeared in the Maclear Magistrate’s Court on the 26 November 2020. They were remanded in custody and the case was postponed to 7 December 2020 for bail application.

As the members were continuing with the investigation another detective, Sergeant Siyabonga Mayile compared a murder case that occurred in 2016 in the same area for which one of the above suspects was identified as he could assist the police investigation however, he fled to Cape Town at the time. Siboniso Rwexana was positively linked to the 2016 murder and appeared in the Maclear Magistrates Court on 30 November 2020.

Both suspects appeared in the Maclear Magistrates Court on 7 December 2020 and the two cases were remanded to 17 December 2020. The suspects remain in custody.

The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Liziwe Ntshinga commended the detectives on the thorough and responsive investigation of the murder cases that led to the arrest of suspects. “It is crucial for Detectives to share information on cases under investigation as suspects, especially in the small towns or policing areas become repeat offenders if they remain in the loose for extended periods”, she added.
