During 2016, 369 farm attacks lead to the death of 71 farmers and family members. The 369 attacks indicate that an average daily rate of 1.01 attacks took place and 0.19 deaths occurred daily.
All indications point to a disastrous year for farmers and a probable increase in attacks are expected. So far, in 2017, there have been 31 attacks on farmers, leaving eight people dead.
In an article published “Farm Murder rates are still shockingly high” Mr. Geldenhuys of TAU- SA said, “It is therefore of utmost importance that security should under no circumstances be lessened during the festive season, in fact, extra precaution should be taken. We cannot afford to lose our people at the hands of criminals.”
