Even though there is a month left in this year, the number of reported farm murders in the past eleven months are higher than for the entire 2015 year. This information is from the latest released statistics on farm murders and attacks made available by TLU SA.

Although on a month-to-month analysis, November 2016 showed a decline in farm attacks when compared to November 2015, the annual figure is alarmingly higher, said Henry Geldenhuys, deputy president of TLU SA and chairman of the safety committee.

According to TLU SA figures, there were four people killed in 19 farm attacks this November. Last year seven people were killed in 31 violent attacks.

From January to November 2016 this year there, have been 63 murders in 319 farm attacks and compared to last year there was 57 murders in 270 attacks for the same period. The final total for the 2015 year recorded 64 people were murdered on farms.

Mr. Geldenhuys, however, pointed out that December is traditionally a month where farm attacks can increase, as people are in a holiday mood, generally more relaxed and not too anxious about security. It is during this time that criminals look for the holiday season as an opportunity to attack. Last year during December, seven people were killed in 49 attacks.

“It is therefore of utmost importance that security should under no circumstances be lessened during the festive season, in fact, extra precaution should be taken. We cannot afford to lose our people at the hands of criminals, “said. Geldenhuys.
