Deputy minister says Malema was ‘virus’ in ANC Youth League

THERE is no love lost between the African National Congress (ANC) and one of its former members, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema. This emerged from the words of Deputy Defence and Military Veterans Minister Thabang Makwetla, who delivered the inaugural Peter Mokaba Memorial Lecture in Polokwane on Thursday.

Since being expelled from the ANC in 2012, Mr Malema has often criticised the ruling party, and will compete against it in the May 7 general election.

The memorial lecture was dedicated to the former ANC Youth League president who also served in Parliament as deputy minister of environmental affairs and tourism. He died in June 2002.

Addressing hundreds of ANC supporters at the University of Limpopo, Mr Makwetla urged the youth league to do intense “soul searching” to discover how the league “produced a virus” like Mr Malema.
