Campus Square shooting: It was quite dramatic – witness

Shots fired at suspected car thieves just outside Campus Square shopping centre on Saturday morning were so loud that a witness thought a robbery was taking place inside.

“All of a sudden I could hear gun shots, about eight of them. You could hear it getting closer. It was so loud we thought it was in the building,” an employee at a store told News24.

The witness, who did not want to be identified, said people inside the Melville mall were “frantic” and running around.

They also chattered loudly as they tried to work out what was going on.

“It was quite dramatic!”

Gauteng police confirmed that a man was shot as flying squad members chased after a vehicle.

The man was one of three arrested for allegedly stealing a car from Killarney, said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

An area was cordoned off in the basement parking at the back of the mall.

Paramedics were earlier seen wheeling a man away on a stretcher.

Dlamini said the suspect was shot in the leg and would remain under police guard.

“Members of the flying squad saw a suspicious vehicle on Empire Road. They followed it but it drove away from them. Members fired several shots until they stopped the vehicle.”

He said officials found ‘car breaking implements’.

The men were likely to appear in court on Monday for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
