The following is an adaptation from an article by Danny Viljoen: After seeing a myriad of comments and posts claiming that a vote for a ‘smaller party’ is a wasted one, I have decided to take this codology on by setting out exactly how the election process works.
I vote for a smaller party because they represent what I believe in, and they defend my beliefs in parliament. Every time there is a discussion regarding sensitive matters such as race, religion or farm murders, my party will give their opinion in parliament. If not for ‘smaller parties’ resisting preposterous propositions by bigger parties in parliament, these propositions would be decided upon unanimously – and would therefore not be representative of the national interests.
For every 37000 votes, a party gets a seat in parliament. Your vote could assure a seat for a party that you don’t agree with, but vote for anyway because they are a ‘bigger party’, or your vote could go to a ‘smaller party’ who will stand up for your beliefs in parliament. Be careful of whom you give that seat in parliament to. Be careful of where your vote goes. Be informed.
