The Maslow, Sandton, in the heart of Sandton’s business district, takes its role as the area’s tranquil green oasis seriously and staff recently took to the streets to clean up litter.

“The Maslow Sandton aims to reduce the impact of our operations on the environment, and besides ‘greening’ the property both indoors and outdoors which has been done for the past decade, as a team, we headed out onto the street to pickup unwanted litter,” said The Maslow Sandton’ Security Manager, Joanne van der Schyff.

Twenty staff members drawn from all departments from housekeeping to reservations, Safety, Environment, Health (SHE) to the kitchens collected a surprisingly large amount of litter.

“We enjoyed the day thoroughly, there was great comradery from the group, and it was wonderful to see how individuals naturally formed teams out of their natural comfort zones which is evident how far the Maslow Hotel’s spirit of Ubuntu has grown,” she said.

The hotel’s SHE team recently implemented colour-coded pedal bins for the various outlets at The Maslow hotel to help with sorting waste at the source. “We hope this will encourage staff to be more conscientious when dealing with waste and recyclable materials,” said Van der Schyff.  Training was provided on all recyclable materials and new understanding raised among the staff that participated, with the goal of zero waste to landfill hoped for in the future.
