A 48-year-old man was arrested on Monday after allegedly attempting to rape an elderly woman in Redcliffe. The incident was captured on body camera footage by Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers during the suspect’s apprehension.
According to reports, a passerby alerted RUSA’s Operations Centre at approximately 14:09 after the suspect broke free from a mob assaulting him and fled into dense bush. Witnesses stated that the man had tried to drag the elderly victim into the bushes before her screams drew the attention of bystanders, who intervened and attacked the suspect.
Before authorities arrived, the mob and the victim had dispersed, leaving officers to conduct an extensive search. The suspect was eventually found hiding under overgrown vegetation near a stream. Despite efforts to locate the elderly woman, she could not be found by the time officers secured the scene.
The suspect remains in custody as police continue their investigation. Authorities are appealing to the victim or any witnesses to come forward to assist with further details.
