Engen employees stepped up to help with the ‘Foodbanking Process at FoodForward SA in support of World Food Day

Engen employees recently stepped up to help with the ‘Foodbanking Process’ at FoodForward SA in support of World Food Day celebrated on October 16th..

Foodbanking includes picking, packing, checking, and distributing food packs to beneficiary organisations (BOs).

“It is estimated that Engen volunteers contributed to distributing the equivalent of an astounding 80,000 meals on World Food Day,” commented Andy du Plessis, managing director of FoodForward SA.

The Engenites also enjoyed sampling dishes prepared by celebrity chefs and BO cooks, while further supporting the cause by purchasing hand-made products sold by local BOs at the FoodForward SA Market Day.

Du Plessis commended Engen for raising awareness about World Food Day and hailed the company for their fuel support of FoodForward SA.

“We thank Engen for their ongoing generosity and for caring enough to make a real difference. Their ongoing fuel support helps FoodForward SA alleviate hunger across the country and ensures many more impoverished households receive food provisions.”

Earlier this year, Engen pledged R2 million fuel to FoodForward SA, taking its total fuel support tothe organization to R6 million since 2020.

Engen’s support has enabled FoodForward SA trucks to travel vast distances, distributing nutritious monthly food parcels to remote rural communities across South Africa.

“As a brand that aims to improve the lives of the communities in which we operate, we at Engen are humbled to partner with FoodForward SA and do our part on World Food Day,” said Engen’s Stakeholder and Transformation Manager, Dr James Xolani Nyawera.

“We hope that the Engen teams’ efforts as well as our fuel contribution will play a small part in ensuring FoodForward SA’s ongoing success in assisting marginalized communities.”

World Food Day is celebrated annually on 16 October and is dedicated to raising awareness about sustainable food systems and addressing hunger worldwide.

FoodForward SA was established in 2009 to address widespread hunger in South Africa, committing itself to connecting a world of excess to a world of need by recovering quality edible surplus food from the consumer goods supply chain and distributing it to community organisations that serve the poor.

Engen champions nine of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being, which aspires to ensure health and well-being for all and SDG 2 – Zero Hunger by addressing food insecurity.

“As a caring and inclusive company with ‘heart’, support of FoodForward SA aligns with Engen’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which endeavour to ensure a better and more sustainable future for all,” added Nyawera.
