From Man to HANUMAN: A Historic Spiritual Gathering to foster Faith and Unity

Durban’s Chatsworth Stadium is set to become the centre of a landmark spiritual and cultural gathering on Sunday, 5 July 2026, when Chinmaya Mission South Africa hosts “From Man to HANUMAN”, a monumental event expected to bring together more than 10,000 seekers in a collective expression of devotion and peace.

The event is expected to set a potential record for the largest synchronised congregation of its kind on African soil, with more than 10,000 participants gathering to chant the universal prayer of Hanuman Chalisa in unison.

Organisers believe the milestone will showcase the strength and vibrancy of South Africa’s Hindu community, while positioning South Africa at the centre of a significant spiritual and cultural achievement for the continent, demonstrating the power of collective prayer, unity and shared purpose. The gathering further marks the 75th anniversary of the Global Chinmaya Movement, which has spent decades transforming lives through its extensive spiritual, educational, and humanitarian initiatives worldwide.

Beginning at 09h30, the gathering will feature 27 rounds of mass chanting of the Hanuman Chalisa, a revered devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Hanuman, widely regarded as a symbol of strength, courage, humility, selfless service and unwavering devotion in Hindu culture. The chanting will be led by internationally acclaimed music icon, Bhajan Samrat Shri Anup Jalota, who is travelling from India exclusively for the event.

The event will be conducted in the divine presence of Pujya Swami Abhedananda, Spiritual In-Charge of Chinmaya Mission South Africa. Swamiji stands revered as the longest-serving Hindu monk from India in South Africa, spearheading Chinmaya Mission in our rainbow nation for the past 20 years since 2006. ‘From Man to HANUMAN’ is an expression of Swamiji’s vision to dissolve divides, unite the community, and usher an era of social well-being and spiritual transformation in South Africa.

Organisers say the event is about much more than setting a milestone attendance figure. “From Man to HANUMAN is more than an event. It is a historic movement of devotion, unity and positivity that brings people together in a spirit of collective upliftment,” says Pavan Maharaj, Trustee of Chinmaya Mission South Africa. “Whether you are familiar with the Hanuman Chalisa or simply wish to experience a powerful atmosphere of unity and faith, everyone is welcome. We hope people from all walks of life and faiths will join us for what promises to be a truly memorable and inspiring day.”

In preparation for the gathering, Chinmaya Mission South Africa has launched the “Flower of Flour” initiative, a community-driven campaign to prepare a monumental offering of 25,000 Rhots to Lord Hanuman. The offering represents one of the largest community-led devotional preparations undertaken in support of the event. Community members are invited to contribute sealed packets of flour, as well as butter, ghee or sugar, at designated collection points across Durban. Those wishing to make a symbolic offering may also visit Chinmaya Annapoorna in Durban to contribute a handful of flour as an act of devotion.

“The Flower of Flour initiative beautifully demonstrates what can be achieved when people come together with a shared purpose. Every contribution, no matter how large or small, forms part of something much bigger than ourselves,” says Maharaj.

The event has also been designed to be as accessible as possible. In partnership with the Hindu Unity Forum of South Africa, free community Yatra buses will operate from several strategic locations across KwaZulu-Natal, making it easier for thousands of people to attend this historic gathering. Free transport will be provided from Greytown, Newcastle, Ladysmith, Mandini and Tugela, Stanger, Isipingo, Phoenix, Springfield, Asherville, Overport, Merebank, Newlands and Parlock, Effingham, Avoca, Red Hill, Greenwood Park, Clare Estate and Reservoir Hills, Port Shepstone, Umzinto and Umkomaas, Richards Bay, and Tongaat. For Yatra bus information and details of your nearest transport coordinator, contact Praneal on +27 64 827 1403.

Attendees can also look forward to receiving energised Sindhoor Prasad, a sacred keepsake traditionally associated with blessings and protection. Saffron flags will also be distributed for attendees to wave in unison during the mass chanting, creating a powerful visual expression of faith, unity and community pride.

Importantly, although the event celebrates a significant milestone for the Hindu community, ‘From Man to HANUMAN’ is open to everyone regardless of faith or background. Organisers encourage members of the public to attend, experience the spirit of unity and devotion, and witness a historic gathering that celebrates values shared across communities.

“At its heart, this gathering celebrates universal values that resonate across cultures and beliefs. It is about fostering harmony, strengthening community connections and creating a space where people can come together in peace” says Maharaj.

The event will take place at Chatsworth Stadium, Durban, on Sunday, 5 July 2026 from 09h30 until 13h30. Attendance is free, safe parking is available, and attendees will be provided with Lunch Prasad. Members of the public are encouraged to participate in what promises to be one of the largest spiritual gatherings ever held in South Africa.

“We invite you to be part of an historic moment as thousands come together in a spirit of devotion, harmony and positivity, to send a powerful message of unity, not only to the people of our nation but to the entire world”, concludes Maharaj.
