The Redhill Arts Festival is gearing up to transform Sandton into a vibrant hub of creativity from 13 to 16 June 2025 at Redhill School. The festival promises a dynamic mix of theatre, music, market stalls, family-friendly activities, and—most notably—bold, unapologetic comedy.
One of the standout events is the ‘Reddest’ Comedy Show, taking place on Sunday, 15 June, from 7:00 PM to 8:45 PM at the Len Miller Theatre. Rated PG-16, the show is strictly for mature audiences, ensuring a night of unfiltered humour.
Comedy Heavyweights Weigh In
Two of the festival’s top comedians, Richelieu Beaunoir and Chris Forrest, shared insights on what attendees can expect.
Forrest, jokingly calling in from the Kruger National Park, quipped, “I was going to run the Comrades Marathon, but then I remembered I’m overweight and unfit. So, I’m here running from lions instead.”
Beaunoir highlighted the unique angle of this year’s comedy lineup, which features fathers in the industry. “We want to show South Africa that comedians can be good dads and be funny,” he said. The show includes performances by Chris Forrest, Nicholas Collide, and David Kau, all balancing humour with fatherhood.
The State of South African Comedy
When asked about the evolution of comedy in South Africa, Beaunoir noted that the scene is experiencing a “rebirth”, blending traditional stand-up with digital content. “Social media has brought in new voices, but live comedy is a different beast,” he said.
Forrest added that while the industry is growing, comedians must adapt to changing sensitivities. “You can’t just recycle jokes from 10 years ago. Audiences are more aware now.”
Both comedians agreed that while political humour remains an easy target, originality is key. “I like to stray from the obvious,” Beaunoir said. “We want to hand over a comedy scene to our kids that we can be proud of.”
A Night of Laughter—and Maybe Socks?
Forrest humorously pleaded with audiences to bring Father’s Day gifts—preferably socks or handmade mugs—along with their ticket purchases. “Attendance is the best gift, but a coffee mug wouldn’t hurt,” he joked.
With sharp wit and a focus on fresh material, the ‘Reddest’ Comedy Show is set to be a festival highlight.
Tickets are available now—just don’t bring the kids.
