6 years have passed since the first frozen movie hit the theaters and stole everybody’s hearts. Now, with Frozen 2 coming soon, the first movie’s musical counterpart is still rampant in the theaters. But the question is what is new? Let’s find out from many of the shows highlights discusses below:

A Story We All Know but With a New Drift

Frozen the Musical mostly follows through the original plot of the movie. Putting little innovations in between this plot the musical has successfully run for almost 3 years. Would it be able to last longer? Truthfully, the subplots have disappointed most of the critics but that calls for a separate heading.

In this heading, we are going to addresses some common concerns of frozen movie fans. Like what changed in the plot? Is the show worth it? What worked best for the audience and what didn’t? So without further ado let’s begin:

What Changed in the Plot?

The plot remains mostly the same other than a few additional scenes. One of them was in efforts to build Anna and Christophe’s love gradually. The character’s little adventures to the snow queen’s mountain have. Other than that, a new duet is also added “I Can’t Lose You,” in the second act. This song exploring sisterly adoration clarifies Elsa’s side of the story.

In the show, the wise hidden creatures of the mountain are replaced with a tribe of sexy looking creatures with dreadlocks, tails and some nicely chiseled abs. one of our favorite characters Sven the life-size reindeer is led by Collin Baja in a furry costume for obvious reasons. Then there is the addition of puppet master F. Michael Haynie with Olaf as a puppet.

The rest of the plot is the same. The musical begins with “Vuelie” as the movie. The smaller versions of Anna and Elsa played by Stella Cobb and Alyssa Kim share a beautiful sisterly love. Only after Elsa mistakenly strikes Anna with her magic these two sisters are separated. The grown-up versions of the girls are played by Caroline Innerbichler as Anna and Caroline Bowman as Elsa.

Elsa’s coronation being ruined, Anna falling in love with Prince Hans, Elsa leaving the kingdom of Arendelle, Anna meeting Christopher and they both trying to bring back Elsa is pretty much the same. Plaza Suite New York is another musical popular in town.

What Worked & What Didn’t?

What impression did the coming together of new and old ideas play in the eyes of the audience? For the most part, the production has been successful in delivering the same sense to its scenes as the original movie. However, there still are some points that could have been better left unchanged.

To begin with, Christopher and Anna’s snow adventures seemed more boringly drawn out to me than romantic. The two characters had developed their feeling just fine in the short time they had in the movie.

Personally, I liked the Waitress musical Chicago rolling, stone-like, wise creatures better. If technically possible the production should come up with an idea to put the original characters in the show. The large costume of our favorite reindeer Sven looks like a tiresome job. It did look a little droopy but otherwise was fine.

Having the puppeteer right behind Olaf the puppet was a little disturbing at first. Though you get used to it when a certain amount of time has passed. Nonetheless, Elsa and Anna’s sisterly love is the same as the movie with the same effect. This portrayal of adorable love between sisters is the likely selling point of the musical.

Creativity & Innovation; Recipe of Production’s Success!

Now it’s time to evaluate the parts of the creative team in the success of the production.

For starters, Christopher Oram’s scenic and costume design worked out for the best parts of the production. Especially the scene when Elsa’s snow castle erupts from the floor to its massive length. Elsa’s changing of the costume was also mesmerizing. The costume is fitting for the scene and the mood plus brings out the element of nostalgia in the audience. Its better then Hadestown. Natasha Katz’s lighting and Finn Ross’ video projections are done a wonderful job to bring the kingdom of Arendelle to life. The gorgeous three-dimensional floor to ceiling pretext is breathtaking.

Peter Hylenski’s stagecraft and sound design make Elsa’s snow tricks all the more believable and real. Designer Jeremy Chernick’s special-effects and Rob Ashford’s choreography each contributed to making the icy yet warm story a memorable experience.
