Tiger Brands donates 3 600 packs of sanitary pads to Grade 6 and 7 girl learners in Tembisa

More than 470 Grade 6 and 7 girl-learners at three schools in Tembisa on Johannesburg’s east rand received a donation of 3 600 packs of sanitary pads in total during a Tiger Brands educational drive. Girl-learners each receive a number of packs, while their schools receive additional stock for their future needs.

Girl learners from Gahlanso Primary, Nyiko Primary and Thuthuka Primary, identified in partnership with by the Gauteng Department of Education and Tiger Brands’ premium bread brand, Albany, attended an educational talk on the female reproductive process and received information on menstrual hygiene facilitated by local NGO, Abundance in Light.

“The correlation between menstruation and school absenteeism has been scientifically proven many times over. In South Africa’s low-income communities, period poverty affects tens of thousands of young girls, who through no fault of their own, miss a large portion of their academic year.

“At Tiger Brands, our commitment to supporting vulnerable communities goes beyond food. Our sanitary pad campaign which has been running for the last three year helps to protect the dignity, confidence, and future of young girls across South Africa,” says Preeya Naidu, Socio-economic Development Manager, Tiger Brands.

Girl learners from the three schools each receive up to five packs of sanitary pads. The schools also receive additional packs to keep in stock.
