What started in 2018 as a partnership based on shared values has evolved into a life-changing force for South African youth. Michelin, a global leader in mobility and innovation, teamed up with Sparrow FET College to empower young people through skills development, training, and meaningful work opportunities, and the results are something to celebrate.

More than 100 learners have already passed through the Michelin-sponsored Tyre Repair and Maintenance programme at the college, gaining not only technical skills but also confidence and purpose. For many, it’s been a fresh start. Some are now employed, others are pursuing further studies, and many have become role models in their communities.

But the organisation’s support extends beyond funding. They have provided essential equipment, hosted learners for training, and remained actively involved in student progress by attending graduation ceremonies, offering mentorship, and simply showing up. They have also backed road safety education for neurodiverse learners, providing their commitment to inclusion, diversity, and community care.

“For us, it is never just about ticking boxes. It is about showing up for the young people of South Africa in ways that truly matter.” Said Elmarie Roberts, HR Director at Michelin SSA. She added, “Watching these learners grow, graduate, and step into their futures with confidence is the most rewarding part of this partnership.”

One of the most touching success stories is Rudzani, a former student who now serves as a facilitator in the very programme that gave him a stepping stone. He is living proof that when young people are believed in and supported, they can rise above their circumstances.

To date, Michelin has invested over 10 million rands into the partnership, a clear sign of long-term commitment. Looking ahead, both organisations are excited to grow the programme, explore new trades, and bring in even more digital and entrepreneurial skills. The dream is to reach more youth, more often, with even greater impact.

At the most recent graduation ceremony for the class of 2024/25, held on 11 July 2025 at Sparrow FET College, emotions ran high as learners reflected on how far they have come. For Michelin, being there was not just a formality; it was a chance to connect with the real stories behind investment. And for the learners, seeing a company show up for them in person was a powerful reminder that they are not alone on this journey. The event also marked the official welcome of the new intake for this ongoing programme, as the class of 2025/26 was introduced and encouraged to be inspired by the achievements of the outgoing graduates.

While there is still much work to be done, partnerships like this remind us what is possible when businesses and communities come together. Not just to teach skills, but to open doors, build confidence, and offer hope for a better future in South African youth.
