A simple act of kindness has inspired Crawford International Pretoria Matric student Mashia Musooko to make a difference in the lives of young children, one crocheted beanie at a time.
Through her community service, Mashia has dedicated 129 hours from Grade 10 to Grade 12 to supporting children in need. Her contributions include visits to orphanages and crocheting beanies for young children, offering them a little extra warmth and comfort.
The initiative was inspired by her sister, who undertook a similar project as part of the Class of 2024. Moved by her sister’s example, Mashia chose to continue the tradition, extending the same kindness to another group of children.

For Mashia, the initiative is about more than making and donating beanies. It is an opportunity to remind young children that they are valued and cared for.
“I chose to make beanies as a small act of kindness and warmth. I hope each child who receives one is reminded that they are cared for, thought of and loved. Sometimes, the smallest gestures can make the biggest difference,” says Mashia.
Her story reflects an important part of the Crawford International approach to education: developing young people who recognise that their potential extends beyond academic achievement. Through opportunities to take initiative, serve others and engage with their communities, students develop qualities that shape how they contribute to the world around them.
This is central to Building Global Leaders, Crawford International recognises that preparing students for the future also means equipping them with the confidence, awareness and sense of responsibility to make a difference.
As Mashia prepares to complete her Matric year, she carries forward a tradition of generosity inspired by her sister, leaving her own mark through 129 hours of service and a simple reminder that kindness, no matter how small, can make a difference.
