Teaching in South Africa remains a challenge, with thousands of educators showing up every day to shape the future – despite the odds. Fundi recently honoured their dedication as a sponsor of the Gauteng Department of Education National Teaching Awards.

Held at the Fortress in Edenvale, the 2025 Gauteng Teaching Awards recognised teachers from the province who go above and beyond despite the very real challenges they face in classrooms.

“Teachers are the backbone of our education system, despite often working under very difficult conditions,” says Mary Maponya, Fundi Executive Head: Sales. “For many this includes overcrowded classrooms, limited resources and the pressure of preparing learners for a rapidly changing world. The National Teaching Awards shine a light on educators who are finding innovative ways to make a real difference despite these obstacles.”

She notes that the challenges facing South African teachers are well-documented. Many work with student-to-teacher ratios that exceed recommended levels, teach in under-resourced schools, and deal with socioeconomic barriers that impact their learners’ ability to learn.

“These awards matter because of these realities,” Maponya explains. “When you’re dealing with limited textbooks, large class sizes and students facing challenges at home, it’s easy to feel like your efforts aren’t making a difference. Events like this remind teachers that they’re seen and valued, and that their work really matters.”

Held in each province annually, the National Teaching Awards aim to do three critical things: acknowledge the hard work and dedication of teachers shaping South Africa’s youth; celebrate innovative and effective teaching practices that positively impact learners’ lives; and motivate educators to continue striving for excellence.

As part of its sponsorship, Fundi provided attending teachers with travel bags. “We wanted to give something helpful that teachers could use, whether they’re attending training, conferences or just need a reliable bag for their daily commute,” says Maponya. “It’s a small token, but it represents our respect for what they do.”

For Fundi, participating in the National Teaching Awards is about walking the talk when it comes to enabling dreams through education. “Our core business is rooted in education financing and holistic support,” she notes. “We help students access learning opportunities while assisting institutions deliver education more effectively. Supporting teachers is a natural extension of that mission. You can’t have quality education without quality educators.

“The partnership aligns with Fundi’s strategic commitment to contributing meaningfully to South Africa’s education ecosystem – not just by providing financial solutions, but by celebrating and supporting the people who make education happen every day.”

By spotlighting best practices and honouring dedicated educators, the awards create a ripple effect across the teaching community. “When you celebrate excellence, you inspire others to reach for it,” says Maponya. “Teachers who attend these events connect with peers, share ideas and leave feeling energised and inspired. This positivity flows back into their classrooms and ultimately benefits thousands of learners.”
With education being fundamental to South Africa’s future – affecting everything from economic development to social mobility – investing in teacher recognition and motivation isn’t optional. It’s essential.

“Every teacher honoured at this event represents countless learners whose lives have been changed,” Maponya concludes. “At Fundi, we’re proud to support these unsung heroes. They deserve recognition, resources and respect for the critical role they play in building our country’s future.”
