Literacy Aid Uganda (LAU) has emerged as a powerful force for social change in Uganda, transforming lives through its initiatives in literacy, women’s empowerment, healthcare, and social justice.
Founded by Irene Mondo and supported by Program Director Anish Shekar, LAU serves over 25,000 Ugandans annually, reaching communities across more than a hundred districts. With ambitions to scale their work across Africa, LAU aims to establish fundraising chapters throughout the continent, strengthening their ability to deliver services and address the root causes of social inequality.
The origins and mission of Literacy Aid Uganda
Since its inception, LAU has focused on reducing illiteracy and creating social change through education. “There are millions of Ugandans who need our help, and we’re looking to expand our reach to serve them,” says Irene Mondo. What began as a literacy campaign has grown into a multi-faceted organization addressing critical societal challenges such as healthcare access, elderly care, and gender equality. LAU’s holistic approach aims not just to educate but to empower Ugandans to lead healthier, more independent lives.
The impact of illiteracy on Uganda and beyond
Illiteracy remains a significant barrier in Uganda, especially in rural communities where resources are limited. According to Shekar, “Illiteracy is a disease that pervades every facet of Ugandan and African society, resulting in great stagnation.” He points to a shortage of qualified English teachers in rural areas, a challenge that directly impacts the quality of education and limits economic mobility. Without basic literacy, individuals struggle to secure jobs, understand health information, and advocate for their rights, perpetuating cycles of poverty and dependency.
Empowering women and addressing social injustice
LAU’s work goes beyond literacy to tackle some of Uganda’s most pressing issues, including gender inequality. By educating women and equipping them with vocational skills, LAU enables them to earn an income and contribute to their communities. This empowerment is crucial in regions where women often face early marriage, limited job opportunities, and limited access to reproductive health services. Additionally, LAU’s programs raise awareness about women’s rights and create safe spaces for discussing sensitive topics, fostering a culture of respect and mutual support.
Healthcare and elderly care
Alongside its educational programs, LAU addresses healthcare gaps by offering basic medical support, especially for the elderly who often lack access to consistent healthcare services. These programs provide not only direct care but also training in essential health practices, helping individuals make informed choices for themselves and their families. By combining literacy and health education, LAU creates a foundation for long-term wellness, ensuring that communities are better equipped to manage their health needs.
Call for volunteers and donors: Expanding across Africa
To support its work, LAU is calling for qualified volunteers, especially educators, to join their mission. The organization is also seeking donations to fund its expansion plans and continue serving the growing number of Ugandans who rely on their services. “We need educated and passionate individuals to help us bridge the gap in educational resources,” says Shekar. LAU’s goal is to establish chapters in countries across Africa to create a network of fundraising partners and volunteers, expanding their reach and ensuring more people have access to education and empowerment.

With its roots firmly in Uganda, LAU’s vision for the future extends to all of Africa, aiming to tackle illiteracy and social inequality on a larger scale. LAU’s work underscores a belief that literacy is more than a skill—it’s a gateway to opportunity, health, and dignity. By fostering education, healthcare, and empowerment, LAU is shaping a brighter future for Uganda and, eventually, for communities across Africa.
