The hotels set a new standard for eco-certified hospitality as part of Marriott International’s growing commitment to environmental responsibility in South Africa.

Johannesburg, South Africa – June 2025: Protea Hotel by Marriott OR Tambo Airport and Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge have become the first Protea Hotels by Marriott in Sub-Saharan Africa to receive Green Key certification, a prestigious eco-label for environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism and hospitality industry.

CEO of WESSA, Cindy-Lee Cloete shared that, “This Green Key certification is more than a plaque on the wall; it reflects a deep, daily commitment to sustainability at every level of hotel operations. These hotels have not only met international standards but exceeded expectations through initiatives like food waste diversion efforts, innovative composting systems, and strong community engagement. What stands out most is the culture of sustainability embedded across the teams, from daily staff briefings to grassroots outreach. This is responsible tourism in action, and we are proud to recognise two hotels that are leading by example and showing what’s possible when environmental responsibility becomes part of the way people work, live and lead.”

The certification, managed nationally by WESSA, the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa and coordinated internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), sets rigorous sustainability standards. It is awarded to establishments that demonstrate excellence in areas including environmental management, energy and water efficiency, waste reduction, and guest and staff awareness.

Sustainability in action

To achieve Green Key certification, the Protea Hotel by Marriott OR Tambo Airport underwent an independent audit and demonstrated an exceptional commitment to operational sustainability and community impact. Notable achievements include:

  • 91% LED lighting coverage throughout the property, nearly double the Green Key requirement of 50%, showcasing a strong commitment to energy efficiency.
  • 15,714 kilograms of food waste diverted from landfill, significantly reducing environmental impact through responsible food waste management.
  • Introduction of an on-site bokashi composting system, converting food waste into compost, and advancing circular waste solutions.
  • Comprehensive staff engagement, with environmental awareness consistently built into daily briefings, back-of-house communications, and team meetings, fostering a shared culture of sustainability across the property.
  • Active community outreach, including mattress donations to shelters, soup drives, and regular staff blood donations, reflecting a deep culture of care and compassion.

“We are incredibly proud to be the first Protea Hotel in Sub-Saharan Africa to achieve the prestigious Green Key certification. We are even prouder of the fact that we are contributing to sustainable tourism. The support we have received from Green Executive and WESSA has been incredible, and we are grateful to the sustainability team at the hotel for making this happen,” says Amy Elliot, outgoing General Manager of Protea Hotel by Marriott OR Tambo Airport.

At the V&A Waterfront, Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge earned certification for its grassroots and guest-facing approach to sustainability, including:

  • A bokashi composting initiative that saved 30.3 tonnes of CO₂e in 2024—equivalent to planting 1,375 trees.
  • Upcycling of coffee grounds repackaged as free, natural fertilizer for guests.
  • Launch of a 100% plant-based restaurant menu, promoting climate-conscious dining.
  • An indigenous water-wise garden that supports local biodiversity and eliminates invasive species.
  • A herb garden, fertilised by in-house compost and used in daily culinary operations.

“This milestone reflects the sustainability journey we’ve embraced as a team,” said Colin Naiker, General Manager of Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge.

“From composting to plant-based menus and water-wise gardens, it’s rewarding to see our daily efforts recognised, while meeting our guests’ growing expectations for sustainability.”

A milestone for responsible travel

The Green Key certification, supported by global institutions such as the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), UNEP, and UNESCO, is awarded to over 7,500 establishments in more than 80 countries. The programme not only promotes environmental best practice in the tourism sector but also reinforces guest confidence in responsible travel and supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
