FREE STATE – Three suspects have been arrested for transformer oil theft and essential infrastructure tampering in the Free State following a swift, intelligence-led operation. The arrests were executed by the Heuningspruit South African Police Service (SAPS) Community Service Centre, with critical support from specialized law enforcement units and private security partners.
According to official reports from the Heuningspruit SAPS Community Service Centre, police received critical intelligence at approximately 08:00 on Saturday, 25 July 2026, regarding a suspicious truck operating at the Serfontein Transnet Sub Station. In response, operational support was immediately mobilized from the Fezile Dabi District Infrastructure Task Team alongside private security partners.
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the joint team responded to the scene and intercepted the targeted vehicle as it attempted to drive out of the sub-station premises.
A search of the truck revealed three male occupants, aged 27, 42, and 43. Investigators discovered two large tanks secured at the back of the vehicle. One of the tanks was loaded with transformer oil valued at an estimated R36,000. Preliminary on-site investigations confirmed that the oil was allegedly drained and stolen directly from the transformers at the Serfontein Transnet Sub Station.
The Fezile Dabi District Infrastructure Task Team confirmed that all three suspects were placed under immediate arrest. They now face formal charges of tampering with, damaging, or destroying essential infrastructure, as well as possession of suspected stolen property.
The suspects remain in police custody and are scheduled to appear in the Kroonstad Magistrate’s Court in the near future. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and pursuing aggressive legal action against those involved in its sabotage or theft.
