FREE STATE — Law enforcement agencies are intensifying their efforts to eradicate illicit operations across the region, culminating in a major illegal mining crackdown in Thabong that resulted in the arrest of three suspects. The three males, aged between 27 and 40, were taken into custody after being discovered conducting unauthorized extraction activities at a residential property.

According to Free State police spokespersons, the joint, intelligence-driven operation took place on Thursday, 23 July 2026. The Bloemfontein Crime Intelligence unit collaborated with the Welkom Public Order Police (POP) to act on actionable information regarding suspected illegal mining activities at a specific house in the Thabong area.

The spokespersons detailed that officers tactically approached the residence to execute the search. However, the situation quickly escalated when the suspects noticed the police presence. In an attempt to hinder the arrest and evade capture, one of the individuals allegedly unleashed a dog, directing it toward the officers and placing them in imminent danger. Law enforcement personnel successfully managed to subdue the animal without sustaining any injuries.

Following the incident, the three suspects were apprehended on the scene and are now facing charges of possession of Gold-Bearing Material (GBM). During the subsequent search of the premises, authorities confiscated various pieces of illicit mining equipment, along with suspected gold-bearing material. All seized items have been secured and will be subjected to further forensic investigation.

These arrests highlight the ongoing, proactive strategy employed by local law enforcement to dismantle criminal syndicates exploiting the region’s mineral resources. The continued collaboration between specialized crime intelligence and public order units remains a critical factor in curbing the illegal extraction of gold and ensuring community safety.
