FREE STATE – A swift joint operation by provincial and local law enforcement has led to the arrest of two suspects in connection with the Mafora murder of Shuping Cecil Debi. The fatal shooting occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 25 April 2026, prompting an intensive, intelligence-driven manhunt that culminated in the suspects’ apprehension at a local establishment.
At approximately 04:10, the victim was driving a red Ford Fiesta through the Mafora location in Mangaung when he was ambushed and fired upon by two unknown male assailants. The gunfire caused the vehicle to veer off the road, crash through a fence, and come to a halt inside a residential yard.
Police and emergency medical services rapidly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, responders found Debi inside the vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities have confirmed that the motive for the fatal attack remains under active investigation.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, a multi-disciplinary task team was assembled to investigate the crime. According to a spokesperson representing the joint task team—which comprises the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, Kagisanong Detectives, and Parkweg Detectives—the coordinated, intelligence-driven manhunt yielded immediate success.
Investigators successfully traced the two suspects, both 30 years old, to a local tavern in JB Mafora. Law enforcement officials confirmed that both individuals were taken into custody without further incident.
The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court in the near future to face formal charges of murder. Police continue to appeal to the public for any additional information that could assist with the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal ambush.
