
TUNIS, Tunisia — Tunisia is battling severe power cuts amid an intense summer heatwave, as record-breaking electricity demand pushes the national power grid to its absolute limit. To prevent a total system collapse, state authorities have enforced rolling blackouts during the peak heat of the day, disrupting households and commercial operations across multiple regions.
The synchronized outages have drawn sharp criticism from citizens facing unbearable midday temperatures. Residents emphasize that the blackouts fail to account for vulnerable populations, such as elderly individuals relying on life-saving oxygen machines or sick family members. This electrical instability is further compounded by ongoing water supply disruptions, adding to the country’s growing social and economic challenges.
Small businesses in local markets are bearing the brunt of the economic fallout. Erratic power supply surges are destroying commercial appliances and spoiling temperature-sensitive inventory, including perishable food and chocolate. Shop owners stress that they lack the financial means to replace ruined stock or damaged equipment, severely threatening their daily livelihoods.
Energy analysts warn that the current energy deficit is structural, exposing a national grid entirely unequipped for climate-induced consumption spikes. Nearly 50 percent of the electricity consumed in Tunisia during the summer is now dedicated to air conditioning, a massive demand load that the country’s legacy electricity infrastructure was simply not designed to handle.
The escalating crisis has triggered significant political blowback. The Tunisian President has publicly demanded state accountability as public outrage mounts over the frequency and synchronization of the outages. While acknowledging that occasional, localized power cuts are not unusual, the President stressed that the current frequency across so many regions simultaneously is abnormal, insisting that those responsible must take accountability and implement immediate, viable solutions.
The disparity in coping mechanisms remains stark. While coastal residents can temporarily escape to the Mediterranean to cool off, inland communities remain trapped, completely dependent on an unreliably powered grid to survive the extreme heat. Moving forward, experts and officials agree that comprehensively strengthening the electricity network will be the key to meeting future peaks in demand and preventing further systemic failures.
