MASERU, Lesotho — Standard Lesotho Bank has announced a major expansion of its global transaction capabilities, pioneering a new Cross Border Interbank Payment System that facilitates direct Renminbi (RMB) transactions between Africa and China. This landmark development positions the financial institution as the first in the country to offer straight-through processing for bilateral trade, aiming to make cross-border payments more efficient, secure, and transparent.
A spokesperson for Standard Lesotho Bank highlighted the significance of the milestone, expressing pride in the institution’s continued leadership in the financial sector. “We are once more the pioneers in the banking fraternity,” the spokesperson stated. “Standard Lesotho Bank has taken a giant leap, pioneering the first capability that facilitates direct transactions between Africa and China.”
The strategic upgrade addresses a massive economic corridor. Currently, trade between Africa and China is valued at approximately $378 billion USD. Bringing the focus to the local economy, Lesotho imports around $77 million USD from China, while exporting mostly wool and mohair valued at approximately $23 million USD. This creates a localized $100 million industry that the bank is now uniquely positioned to serve.
“We are at the center of it, as Standard Lesotho Bank can now trade directly with China, executing interbank transfers,” the spokesperson explained.
The newly introduced platform utilizes what the financial industry terms “straight-through processing.” This mechanism allows participating financial institutions to interchange payments directly with the yuan (RMB) without the involvement of middlemen or intermediary banks. By removing these traditional bottlenecks, the system ensures that transactions are significantly faster and more reliable.
“Trade moves economies, and that is our contribution as Standard Bank,” the spokesperson added.
This technological launch arrives at a critical time when trade between Africa and China continues to rapidly expand. The growing economic ties are creating an increased, sustained demand for efficient and dependable cross-border payment solutions, positioning Standard Lesotho Bank at the forefront of international financial innovation on the continent.
