FREE STATE – Five suspects have been arrested in Bloemfontein following a coordinated police swoop targeting armed robbery and illicit drug operations in the city. Members of the Public Order Police Unit apprehended the individuals after a foot pursuit and a subsequent raid on a suspected drug house, removing a dangerous firearm and a significant quantity of narcotics from the streets.
Armed Robbery and Foot Pursuit
The multi-unit operation began when officers from Platoon 6 were patrolling along the M10 Road. During the patrol, the operators noticed a group of men running across an open veld towards the Pieter Swarts area in Bloemside 2. Suspecting foul play, the officers pursued the group on foot to investigate.
During the pursuit, two victims approached the police to report that they had just been robbed at gunpoint by the fleeing men. Operators from Platoon 5 quickly joined the search, leading to the successful hunting down and arrest of four males, aged between 24 and 28.
A spokesperson for the Public Order Police Unit confirmed that a 9mm silver pistol and a magazine loaded with a single bullet were recovered and seized from the suspects during the apprehension.
Freedom Square Drug Bust
Following the initial arrests, further intelligence guided the team to a suspected drug house located in Freedom Square. A search of the premises was conducted, yielding a significant quantity of illicit substances. Officers seized five full, seven half, and eight quarter Mandrax tablets.
A 30-year-old male suspect was apprehended at the scene and arrested for possession of and dealing in illicit drugs.
Multiple Dockets Opened
According to the police spokesperson, multiple case dockets have been opened to reflect the severity of the offenses. A case of robbery with a firearm was registered at the Kopanong Police Station, while a separate docket for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition was opened at the Bloemspruit Police Station. A third docket regarding the drug offenses was also established at Kopanong.
All five suspects are scheduled to make their first appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court soon.
