SOUTH AFRICA — At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, South Africa and China have significantly advanced their bilateral AI and science collaboration. South Africa’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Blade Nzimande, and China’s Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Yin Hejun, convened for a high-level bilateral meeting to cement a shared vision for technological innovation and joint research.
A cornerstone of the dialogue was the formal establishment of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organisation (WAICO). Prof. Nzimande formally thanked the People’s Republic of China for including South Africa as a founding member in the organisation’s official launch. He also commended the opening address delivered by Chinese President Xi Jinping, characterizing the remarks as deeply insightful, and reiterated South Africa’s dedication to the successful operationalisation of WAICO.
During the engagement, the ministers mapped out a comprehensive framework to broaden cooperative efforts across several strategic domains. This expanded partnership will target advancements in artificial intelligence, the creation of joint research centres and laboratories, space science and astronomy, quantum computing, and cybersecurity. Additionally, the agreement prioritizes human capital development through enhanced public engagement, targeted youth initiatives, and the Young Scientists Exchange Programme.
Highlighting domestic progress alongside international ties, Prof. Nzimande detailed South Africa’s upcoming initiative to build a dedicated national science and technology museum. On the global stage, he expressed profound appreciation for China designating South Africa as the “Country of Honour” at the 19th Pujiang Innovation Forum, which is scheduled to be hosted in China in September 2026.
Acknowledging broader diplomatic alignments, the Minister extended his gratitude to China for its steadfast support of South Africa’s current G20 Presidency. In a reciprocal gesture, he formally invited the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology to attend the Science Forum South Africa, recognized as the continent’s premier global science gathering, slated for December 2026.
These pivotal international discussions and technological alignments unfold as South Africa actively observes National Science Month throughout July.
