GAUTENG — A significant Sunrise gold-bearing material arrest was executed this past Friday after the South African Police Service (SAPS) uncovered suspected precious stones during a routine theft report. Two women and one man are now facing legal charges after officers inadvertently discovered the illicit materials at a local police precinct.

The incident occurred on Friday, 03 July 2026, at approximately 19:20 at Sunrise Police Station. According to authorities, the trio initially arrived at the precinct to report a cellphone theft. Police investigations revealed that the missing phone was tied to a disagreement over a private agreement between the involved parties.

While officers were facilitating the exchange of items related to the dispute at the station, they noticed a black spectacle bag. Upon inspecting the bag, law enforcement found stones that they suspected to be gold-bearing material.

To verify the nature of the stones, a Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) official was brought in to assess the situation. After examining photographic and video evidence of the contents, the DMRE representative confirmed that the stones indeed appeared to be gold-bearing.

Following this confirmation, the three individuals were immediately arrested for unlawfully possessing suspected gold-bearing material, a direct violation of the Precious Metals Act, 2005 (Act 37 of 2005). The suspects remain in police custody as detectives continue their investigation into the matter.

Addressing the broader implications of the bust, a SAPS spokesperson emphasized the police service’s unwavering dedication to cracking down on illegal mining-related crimes. The spokesperson noted that authorities are heavily focused on stopping the unlawful possession and trafficking of precious metals across the region.
