RUSTENBURG, North West — A quiet community in Rustenburg has been shaken after multiple bodies were discovered floating in a local river, prompting fears among residents that a serial killer may be operating in the area.
The discoveries began when residents raised the alarm about bodies in the waterway. The first victim identified was 36-year-old Gomolemo Olifant, who went missing on May 7. Her body was recovered from the river 13 days later. A week afterward, on May 14, 36-year-old Thapelo Ditsele disappeared. His remains were retrieved from the same river on May 26. The third identified victim, 34-year-old Christopher Mogomotsi, vanished on May 28, and his body was found 13 days later.
Police have confirmed that a fourth body was also recovered from the river but remains unidentified.
Community activist Koketso Berries has drawn attention to disturbing similarities between the victims. According to Berries, all the bodies were found facing downward in the water and none were naked. When the bodies were turned over, Berries noted they displayed what appeared to be large, wide-open wounds rather than gunshot injuries.
“These bodies, they are always facing downwards, you know, and then you see them floating,” Berries said. “They are all wearing [clothes], none of them were naked, and then now when they are being turned, we can never say it’s a gun. Normally it’s like a very huge wide open wound.”
The pattern of discoveries has left residents on edge, with many expressing fear that a serial killer is targeting their community.
“There’s a serial killer who’s busy trying to make sure that our community don’t enjoy the freedom that we supposed to enjoy,” one resident said. “The person who is doing this, first thing when he just kidnap one person, it just started like as a bite and now it’s happening like frequently, like every day. So we are no longer safe.”
North West acting police commissioner Rayno Naidoo addressed the situation, explaining that postmortem examinations and forensic pathology tests have been conducted on the recovered bodies, though most were in an advanced stage of decomposition.
“One of the main things is that most of the bodies were in an advanced stage of decomposition,” Naidoo said. “We have conducted postmortem and forensic pathology tests. We are waiting for the final outcome.”
According to Naidoo, preliminary results suggest that most victims died from drowning, though investigators are examining one case that may indicate an unnatural cause of death.
“At this stage, we can’t say that there were any foul play in all of the matters because the bodies were found floating in the river, whether it was drownings,” Naidoo explained. “I think one of the bodies we are looking at particularly because it could indicate some unnatural cause, but the others at this stage, without any forensic results, it’ll be premature to say there was foul play.”
Police have consolidated the cases for investigation purposes, primarily due to the geographic location and certain similarities between the incidents. However, authorities emphasize that no conclusive evidence currently links the deaths to a single perpetrator.
“At this stage, as I indicated, the cases are being pulled together mainly because of the location and similarities of issues,” Naidoo stated. “We have not yet found any evidence to indicate that there is a serial killer or if they were all murders. So the fact that we’re pulling it together, we should there be any commonalities or any forensic evidence that links these to indicate that there is a serial killer, then obviously it will be [appropriate to] appoint one investigator.”
Naidoo acknowledged the community’s concerns while maintaining that investigators must wait for forensic results before drawing conclusions.
“But at this stage, you know, nothing to suggest that it is a serial killer, but understand the timelines and the situation. It drives the concerns of the community,” he said.
Police have confirmed that nothing in the current investigation suggests a serial killer is active in the Boitekong area. Authorities are awaiting final forensic pathology reports to determine the exact circumstances surrounding each death.
The unidentified victim found in the river has not yet been named, and police are continuing efforts to identify the individual and notify next of kin.
As the investigation continues, residents remain anxious, waiting for answers about the deaths that have cast a shadow over their community.
