FREE STATE — A significant Welkom drug arrest took place after South African Police Service (SAPS) officers raided a residence in the Sandania suburb, resulting in the detention of a 38-year-old foreign national on suspicion of narcotics trafficking.
On Thursday, 2 July 2026, members attached to the Welkom Public Order Police (POP) were executing standard crime-combating duties when they received a tip-off regarding an African male distributing illegal substances from a specific house in Sandania.
Following the operationalization of this intelligence, officers proceeded to the targeted property. Upon arrival, they encountered a man matching the provided description. After requesting and receiving consent to search the premises, police uncovered a substantial quantity of illicit substances and drug-trafficking paraphernalia.
According to a spokesperson for the Welkom Public Order Police, the search yielded 108 small ziplock bags containing CAT, 10 sachets of crystal meth, and eight full Mandrax tablets. The spokesperson further detailed that officers also confiscated a small electronic scale and an undisclosed amount of cash, which is presumed to be the proceeds of criminal activities.
The alleged suspect was immediately taken into custody following the Welkom drug arrest. He has been formally charged with possession of and dealing in suspected drugs. SAPS spokespersons confirmed that the accused is scheduled to make his first appearance at the Welkom Magistrate’s Court in the near future.
