HANOVER — A Hanover rehabilitation centre supervisor sentenced to 28 years in direct imprisonment faced the regional court this week as the final penalty was handed down for a series of brutal attacks. The lengthy prison term concludes a comprehensive trial that detailed multiple severe offenses committed against two separate victims over a span of several years.
The final judgment was delivered on Monday, 22 June 2026, at the De Aar Regional Court. The presiding magistrate convicted the facility’s supervisor on a total of ten charges. The guilty verdicts encompassed two counts of common assault, four counts of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), crimen injuria, kidnapping, attempted murder, and a single count of rape.
2019 Incident and Initial Investigation
The legal proceedings stemmed first from the harrowing experience of a 39-year-old male patient who had been admitted to the Hanover treatment facility. According to court records, the man fled the premises on 30 October 2019. He sought police assistance shortly after enduring physical and severe sexual abuse at the hands of the employee. Prompt medical evaluations substantiated his claims, confirming he had been physically battered and sexually violated.
Following these revelations, Detective Sergeant Ilza Fan and Sergeant Shawn Moses from the De Aar Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit took over the probe. Their thorough investigation led to the supervisor’s initial arrest, after which he was released on bail.
2021 Incident and Bail Violation
The second set of charges originated when a 53-year-old woman filed kidnapping and assault charges against the same supervisor on 22 July 2021. Sergeant Shawn Moses of the De Aar FCS Unit was again tasked with the investigation. The accused was taken into custody but later granted bail under the strict stipulation that he submit to court-ordered mental observation.
Disregarding these legal conditions, the supervisor failed to undergo the required mental evaluation. Instead, he launched a severe physical attack on the 53-year-old complainant on Saturday, 18 January 2025. This blatant violation of his bail terms triggered his immediate re-arrest. He was kept behind bars for the remainder of the trial until his ultimate conviction.
Detailed Sentencing Breakdown
During the sentencing phase, the court outlined the individual penalties for each of the ten counts:
Count 1 (Common Assault): 6 months’ imprisonment
Count 2 (Common Assault): 6 months’ imprisonment
Count 3 (Rape): 6 years’ imprisonment
Count 4 (Assault GBH): 2 years’ imprisonment
Count 5 (Assault GBH): 3 years’ imprisonment
Count 6 (Assault GBH): 3 years’ imprisonment
Count 7 (Assault GBH): 3 years’ imprisonment
Count 8 (Crimen Injuria): 2 years’ imprisonment
Count 9 (Kidnapping): 3 years’ imprisonment
Count 10 (Attempted Murder): 15 years’ imprisonment
To determine the final time to be served, the court applied concurrent sentencing rules. The terms for counts 1 through 6, alongside counts 8 and 9, were ordered to run at the same time, yielding a baseline effective sentence of 10 years. Separately, the sentences for counts 7 and 10 were also set to run concurrently, adding an effective 18 years. When combined, the court mandated a total of 28 years of direct imprisonment.
