FREE STATE — Law enforcement officials are urgently tracking a primary suspect in connection with a devastating Harrismith farm double murder that left two young brothers dead. While one individual has been taken into custody for questioning, police emphasize that the actual assailant remains at large.

The detained individual is a 31-year-old man who was apprehended after allegedly being discovered in possession of blood-stained trousers belonging to one of the victims. Authorities clarified that this man is not the primary perpetrator but is currently being held to assist detectives with the ongoing inquiry.

The fatal attack unfolded on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, at approximately 14:15 at Toekoms Farm, situated just outside Harrismith. The victims have been identified as 14-year-old Thabiso Lakaje and his 9-year-old sibling, Reanetswe Lakaje. Both boys were subjected to a severe and fatal assault by an identified suspect under circumstances and for reasons that remain entirely unexplained.

A security guard on the property made the grim discovery near the entrance of the family’s residence. The children were found with their hands and mouths tightly bound and fastened with cloth. The guard immediately notified the farm manager upon finding the boys.

Upon discovery, the older brother, Thabiso, was already deceased. Emergency responders rushed the younger brother, Reanetswe, to a nearby local hospital, but medical personnel were unable to save him, and he subsequently succumbed to his severe injuries.

The mother of the boys was away at work when the brutal assault occurred and was notified of the tragedy after the fact. Investigators have not yet established a motive for the killings, and the probe continues to unfold.

The South African Police Service is actively pleading for public assistance to apprehend the fleeing suspect. Community members possessing any actionable intelligence are encouraged to reach out directly to the Harrismith Detective Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Mpholo, at 082 854 7542. Alternatively, tips can be anonymously reported to CrimeStop via 08600 10111.
