BLOEMFONTEIN — A 29-year-old man has been handed a direct imprisonment sentence by the Bloemfontein Regional Court after being convicted of rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) against his 18-year-old girlfriend.
The conviction follows a violent attack that took place at the accused’s residence on the evening of Monday, June 2, 2025, at approximately 20:00. Court proceedings revealed that the teenage victim had visited the property solely to retrieve her school uniform. Fearing for her safety, she remained at the doorway and asked the accused to pass the uniform to her. Instead, the man forcibly dragged her inside the home by her clothing and subjected her to a severe physical beating.
Following the physical assault, the perpetrator stripped the victim and sexually violated her. The survivor subsequently reported the ordeal to law enforcement, prompting the immediate opening of a rape docket.
The case was taken up by Detective Sergeant Vuyisile Salemane, operating out of the Bultfontein Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. Through a meticulous investigation, Det. Sgt. Salemane successfully tracked and arrested the suspect, ensuring he was kept behind bars throughout the legal process until his conviction. The state’s case was later bolstered by Prosecutor Makokoe from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), who collaborated closely with the detective to ensure the offender was held accountable.
The legal proceedings concluded on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, when Magistrate Matthews delivered the guilty verdict. In his sentencing, Magistrate Matthews imposed 18 years in prison specifically for the rape charge. An additional five-year sentence was handed down for the assault GBH count, culminating in a direct custodial term for the perpetrator.
