MOPANI DISTRICT – A 49-year-old man is in custody following a Letsitele arrest connected to the alleged rape of a mentally challenged 17-year-old teenager in the Mopani District. The suspect was apprehended after the victim’s mother discovered his physical distress and reported the repeated assaults to authorities.

The investigation was initiated on Sunday, 21 June 2026, when the complainant—identified as the victim’s mother—observed her son struggling to walk. Upon questioning him about his condition, the teenager disclosed that a male suspect had raped him on multiple separate occasions over the preceding week.

Due to the pain and discomfort he was experiencing, the mother transported the victim to a local clinic for a medical examination. Following the medical evaluation, she formally reported the incidents to law enforcement, prompting officers to officially open a rape case docket.

Swift police action led to the suspect’s capture at Mavele Village on Monday, 22 June 2026. The case has been assigned to the Tzaneen-based Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, which is actively driving the investigation.

The 49-year-old accused is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Tuesday, 23 June 2026, at the Nkowankowa (Ritavi) Magistrate’s Court, where he will face a formal charge of rape. Authorities have confirmed that police investigations into the matter remain ongoing.
