JOHANNESBURG — A significant City Deep copper seizure has disrupted a transnational smuggling syndicate after South African law enforcement agencies intercepted R12.68 million worth of stolen cargo in Johannesburg.

The successful operation was executed through a coordinated, intelligence-led task team comprising the South African Police Service (SAPS), Gauteng Crime Intelligence, Interpol, Border Police City Deep, and private security partners.

The investigation was initially triggered by intelligence from Zambian authorities, who reported the hijacking of three trucks transporting copper blocks. Investigators discovered that the criminal network utilized trucks fitted with counterfeit Tanzanian registration plates to facilitate the crime. One of the hijacked vehicles was subsequently recovered in Zambia; it was found displaying registration numbers belonging to a legitimate South African logistics company and was allegedly used to move the stolen metal.

Tracing the movement of the illicit cargo, authorities established that two trucks carrying approximately 121 tonnes of copper slabs crossed into South Africa through the Beitbridge Border Post on 10 June 2026. The vehicles allegedly bypassed standard checks using fraudulent customs documentation.

Acting on this intelligence, the multidisciplinary team launched a follow-up operation on 18 June 2026. During the raid, officials confiscated 26 bundles of the metal, valuing the confiscated cargo at an estimated R12,680,000. Forensic examination of the seized material revealed that the original serial numbers had been deliberately filed off in a clear attempt to obscure the cargo’s origin.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection with the bust at this stage. The investigation remains active, with police pursuing all available leads to identify and apprehend the individuals orchestrating the smuggling operation.
