OGIES — Two men are facing charges of unlawful possession of ammunition following a highway patrol bust in the Ogies policing area that uncovered a cache of 150 AK-47 rounds hidden inside a vehicle. The Middelburg Flying Squad executed the arrest on Thursday, 18 June 2026, seizing the illicit firearms components during a routine crime prevention operation.
The incident unfolded at approximately 20:00 when squad members intercepted a black BMW 1 Series traveling along the N12 highway. The vehicle, displaying Gauteng registration plates, was pulled over for a standard search. Inside were two male occupants, aged 36 and 39, identified as a South African citizen and a Mozambican national.
During the physical inspection of the car, officers located a concealed black plastic bag tucked away inside a first-aid kit within the boot. Upon opening the package, police discovered it was packed with 150 live rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
Investigators questioned the pair regarding the large quantity of rifle rounds. Neither man could provide a legitimate explanation or produce the necessary legal documentation to authorize their possession of the weaponry. Consequently, both suspects were taken into custody. In addition to the ammunition, police confiscated two cellular phones found in their possession as part of the evidence.
The 36-year-old and 39-year-old have been formally charged with unlawful possession of ammunition. They are currently being held in police detention and are scheduled to make their first court appearance shortly to answer to the charges.
