DUNOON, WESTERN CAPE — The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) has officially distanced itself from a controversial anti-illegal immigration march scheduled to take place in Dunoon this weekend, warning residents that civic frustration must never be weaponized to justify unlawful actions.

While the civic organization acknowledges that local concerns regarding crime, high unemployment, and undocumented immigration are entirely legitimate, leadership stresses that border control and immigration enforcement remain strictly the mandate of the state. According to SANCO, directing protests toward specific individuals rather than government institutions poses a severe risk of inflaming community tensions.

The suburb is a densely populated and diverse area, with more than 70,000 people residing across its 54 sections. Community leaders estimate that a significant portion of the population consists of foreign nationals, both documented and undocumented. Because Dunoon is centrally located near major industrial areas and economic hubs, it naturally acts as a magnet for both South African citizens and non-nationals seeking economic opportunities.

Addressing the demographic reality of the area, a SANCO spokesperson emphasized that the community is deeply integrated and that vigilante justice threatens that fragile social cohesion.

“When there is a vigilante group whose intent is to create scare tactics, it can take this community backwards,” the spokesperson stated. They argued that any protest designed to provoke individuals instead of demanding government intervention carries the potential of being maliciously orchestrated with the sole purpose of destabilizing the country.

As the Saturday demonstration approaches, the organization issued a firm warning to the public: genuine civic grievances cannot serve as an excuse for vigilantism, unlawful behavior, or the targeted harassment of specific groups within the community. Residents are urged to direct their demands for service delivery and law enforcement to the appropriate government authorities rather than taking matters into their own hands.
