Man arrested for firing at Uber driver in Verulam

Arrive Alive

A Verulam businessman has been arrested after he fired multiple shots at an Uber Driver on Primrose Drive in Southridge, Verulam.

At approximately 00:55 members of Reaction Unit South Africa responded to the scene after receiving several calls from residents in the area reporting shots being fired. Upon arrival, it was established that the driver of a black GWM bakkie pulled over a Toyota Quest after he switched on a flashing bar light fitted to his dash board.

Assuming it was a SAPS Official the driver of the Toyota Quest stopped on the side of the road. The driver of the bakkie approached the man, who is a resident of Southridge and was returning to his home after work, and requested his driver’s license. While searching for his driver’s license the Indian businessman took the victims cell phone to prevent him from making any calls. The victim claimed that at that point he realised that the driver of the bakkie was not a policeman and attempted to drive off.

The businessman fired several shots at the vehicle forcing the driver to stop. The victim then fled on foot while the suspect continued firing shots in his direction. The suspect stole the keys from the vehicle before he got back into his bakkie and rammed the Toyota Quest off the road. He then fled the scene.

While Reaction Officers were interviewing the victim the suspect returned to the scene stating that he assumed that the Uber driver was a hijacker and decided to apprehend him. The suspect was found in possession of the victim’s cellphone and the keys to the Toyota Quest.

Reaction Officers seized the suspect’s firearm and placed him under arrest. He is facing charges of attempted murder, armed robbery and malicious damage to property.
