Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal — An attempted hijacking targeting a mother and her children in Phoenix was foiled after community members intervened, leaving the family severely traumatized but physically unharmed.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday evening at the intersection of Avalen Crescent and Northcroft, where a group of armed suspects allegedly moved in on a blue Toyota Corolla occupied by the woman and her children.

According to reports, between four and five armed African male suspects attempted to forcefully remove the occupants from the vehicle. However, their plan was disrupted when family members and local residents noticed the attack and rushed to intervene.

As the community members closed in, the suspects allegedly fired several gunshots before abandoning the hijacking attempt. They fled the scene in a silver-grey Hyundai i10.

Members of KZN VIP Security and Emergency Medical Services were quickly dispatched to the location following reports of the incident. Upon arrival, KZN VIP medics assessed the female driver and her children, finding them to be severely shaken by the ordeal. Emergency personnel remained on scene to provide emotional support and ensure the family’s wellbeing.

Fortunately, no physical injuries were sustained during the incident.

The South African Police Service (SAPS), alongside KZN VIP and other emergency response stakeholders, attended the scene to begin investigations. The full circumstances surrounding the attempted hijacking remain unconfirmed at this stage, and enquiries continue.
