In a joint operation aimed at curbing illegal trade, Hoedspruit police and a local Farm Watch initiative have seized 23 boxes of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R575,000.

The interception took place in the early hours of Thursday, June 4, 2026, when authorities stopped a Volkswagen Tiguan SUV suspected of transporting the contraband. Upon being intercepted, the unknown male driver immediately abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, successfully evading arrest.

Following a search of the abandoned SUV, officers discovered the 23 boxes of illicit cigarettes, which hold an estimated street value of more than R500,000, totaling R575,000.

The Hoedspruit police have launched a manhunt for the suspect and are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying him. Anyone with information that could aid in tracing the suspect is urged to contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Jabulani Mashaba, at 076 852 0004.
