The Kimberley Magistrate’s Court has sentenced 23-year-old Malusi Ongama to eight years of direct imprisonment for tampering with essential infrastructure.

On 22 August 2025, Transnet employees caught Ongama red-handed while he was allegedly cutting cables underneath a bridge in De Beers, Kimberley. A case of tampering with essential infrastructure was subsequently registered at the Kimberley Police Station.

The investigation was led by Sergeant Neil Jacobs of the Northern Cape Provincial Organised Crime Unit, who built the case against the accused. Ongama appeared in court multiple times, and his bail application was successfully opposed. The court also declared Ongama unfit to possess a firearm.
