Madibeng Municipality in North West has declined to comment on allegations that some of its employees are linked to illegal mining operations, instead directing all complaints to national authorities.
Residents of Mmakau, particularly in areas such as Block 7, say illegal mining activities are taking place close to residential homes with minimal intervention from authorities. Community members claim this has left them living in constant fear, with concerns that the situation could worsen without urgent government action.
Locals have alleged that certain municipal employees are connected to the mining activities. One resident expressed frustration over the lack of intervention, while community voices highlighted ongoing struggles with the municipality.
In response, the municipality stated that matters relating to mining fall under the responsibility of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. It emphasised that illegal mining is a criminal offence and that such activities should be reported to the appropriate national bodies.
“The municipality has no jurisdiction over this matter of illegal mining,” the municipality said.
Residents, including those linked to a traditional authority, continue to call for stronger action, warning that failure to address illegal mining in the Mmakau area of the North West could lead to further damage to homes and community safety.
