A 36-year-old man from Galeshewe in Kimberley has been sentenced to ten years of direct imprisonment after being found guilty of the rape of a 44-year-old woman.
Desmond Flames was convicted by the Galeshewe Sexual Offences Court in connection with an incident that took place in the early hours of Sunday, 11 August 2019.
According to evidence presented in court, the victim was asleep at her residence when she was awakened by someone touching her. Initially believing it to be her boyfriend, she did not react immediately and went back to sleep. She later became suspicious of the individual’s behaviour. Upon realising that the person in her bed was not her boyfriend, she reported the matter to the police.
A case of rape was registered at Galeshewe Police Station and assigned to Detective Constable Orapeleng Mamapula of the Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for further investigation.
In March 2026, DNA results were finalised and directly linked Flames to the incident. He was subsequently found guilty and sentenced accordingly.
Flames’ name has also been entered into the National Register for Sexual Offenders.
