
A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years’ direct imprisonment for a domestic violence-related assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in Fraserburg.
The Namakwa District Management has acknowledged the conviction and sentencing, which stemmed from an investigation by the Calvinia Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
According to the case facts presented, on 10 November 2025, the accused, Jan De Wee (32), assaulted his 29-year-old life partner at her residence. While under the influence of alcohol, De Wee became aggressive and physically assaulted the victim. He subsequently transported her to his mother’s house, where a further confrontation occurred. The accused then dragged the victim to a nearby field and assaulted her with a panga, inflicting multiple open wounds and bruises.
The victim received assistance from her cousin in contacting the South African Police Service and was later transported to Fraserburg Hospital for medical treatment.
The investigation was conducted by Detective Warrant Officer David Matthys of the Calvinia FCS Unit. On 14 April 2026, the accused was found guilty of Assault GBH (domestic violence-related) and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. Additionally, the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm in accordance with Section 103(1)(g) of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.
